I created a series of acrylic on canvas folk art paintings - on which I have applied wise words from wise men: John Calvin (French Theologian and pastor during the Reformation, 10 July 1509 – 27 May 1564) , GK Chesterton (English writer, Christian apologist, 29 May 1874 – 14 June 1936), CH Spurgeon (British Particular Baptist preacher, 19 June 1834 – 31 January 1892), William Gurnall (English author and clergyman, 1617 – 12 October 1679), and John Newton (British sailor and Anglican clergyman, writer of "Amazing Grace", 24 July 1725 – 21 December 1807).

What is an authentic GICLEE? I offer a limited number of fine art reproductions labeled "Giclee" in my etsy shop. These are NOT home-printer reproductions! These are professionally printed on a commercial printer by an authorized Epson Giclee master and are printed to heirloom/museum/archival standards on highest quality archival artist paper. They are brighter and more vivid than even the best home prints could ever be and they are, dare I say, better than the originals in intensity and saturation! When I use the term "Giclee" in my shop - I mean it. (Watermarks do not appear on final giclee prints). Each giclee is signed and dated.

I will be placing my Giclee order soon. I will be offering 8x10's and perhaps something close to 5x7. Additionally, there may be a series of blank greeting cards and Artist Trading Cards! Planning the New Year?

I put this quote up in my "cover photo" space face book has newly created for us in the so-called "timeline" format. With 2012 racing this direction at the usual speed, I found great wisdom and comfort in what Spurgeon said. He also said this: "Do much, very much, all you can do, and a little more. “How is that?” says one. I do not think a man is doing all he can do if he is not attempting more than he will complete."
Intense. I love it.

He continued: "But, young friend, there is a difference, and more than a slight one, between intentions and accomplishments. We do not always perform what we think we shall, nor do we always reach where we hope to arrive. Failures are as numerous as successes, and even the most successful have failures to mourn over. Good intentions are not so rare that you may begin to crow about them; there is a road which is paved with them, but I would not have you travel it."

I have never been one to proclaim a list of resolutions -- I just never have been able to place any value on it. Let your yes be yes and your no be no... do it or don't do it. Better still "Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil." (Matthew 5:37 ESV)

Spurgeon said plenty about this topic. "A bushelful of resolutions is of small value; a single grain of practice, is worth the whole" and "You had great conceptions, and if they had but been embodied in action something good would have come of them; but where are the ideas now? Were they not smothered in their birth? You resolved to do great things, the plan was thoroughly arranged, and your whole heart was eager to carry it out, but delay chilled the goodly purpose till it died of cold, and it lies buried in forgetfulness. You dreamed well, but there you stopped. As for actual work for the Lord, you had other fish to fry, and therefore you cast out your net for him. You suffered the season for activity to go by, and so your excellent ideas and resolutions melted into thin air, and they are gone."

So where is the encouragement as 2012 continues to race towards us this very second? Spurgeon again answers us: "Hope as much as ever a man can hope; for when your hope is in God you cannot hope too much" .... "Is there nothing to sing about to-day? Then borrow a song from to-morrow; sing of what is yet to be. Is this world dreary? Then think of the next."

Amen. Happy New Year.

- where the views are eternal, death is alive, and Hope is victorious -

We had another glorious out-of-place weather week. It reached 70(F) and since we live in a micro-climate along Lake Erie the leaves are still on the trees here in November. My son and I knew it would be a great day at Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, so off we went.

The winding drive down MLK Boulevard from the lake shore is always interesting, but yesterday the leaves were falling and it was like a confetti parade. This area of Cleveland (between University Hospitals/Cleveland Clinic) - the area called University Circle - is just such a beautiful place.

Upon arrival at Lake View my son headed straight for an area that has a small grove of thread leaf Japanese Maples. He has photographed them through the years and today we expected them to be ablaze… and they were. I wondered off to read headstones, but without much deliberation. I recognized one family right away; I had figured out some of their story a couple of years ago on a similar day. I could see that Harold lost his wife while she was only 28, and she left him a newborn. I wondered if she died giving birth; it was the late 1800’s. With no specific date other than the year it was impossible to tell if his birth date and her death date were the same (since his headstone was also there). Harold remarried and Edith also gave him a son. Harold died only 5 years later. Edith had her own son and this other son to raise alone (or so it seemed, she was, after all, buried on Harold‘s right, his first wife on his left, and no other man around that could be matched to her). Both of those boys died a year apart 9 and 10 years later. Edith lived until 1941; apparently unmarried and without any other children.

Another family, Carabelli I think it read, have a huge family monument with smaller stones surrounding it. It speaks of wealth and standing. They perhaps had money, but tragedy visited them often. On one end of the family monument flush to the ground is a stone with the names of 3 children. On the opposite end is another stone with 3 more children. Each child died between the ages of one and four, but not at the same time. Some terrible thing visited them; a genetic issue? an accident? or worse? In this day and age the immediate thought was that Children’s Services would have been all over that household, but such judgment needs to be put aside for we just don’t know. Heartbreak was no stranger to them; that we can be sure.

A short distance across a roadway I saw the names of two little girls on one stone, ages 3 and 6, who died together on December 14. Next to their stone was a brother who died 3 days later on the 17th; he was 4. It was the 1870’s - were they all sick and he lingered? Were they all in a fire or an accident and they thought the little guy was going to pull though? The stones never tell anything other than the cold hard facts; they died.

Walking through this enormous place does not make me sad. Perhaps because it is feels distant and historic, so antique. The newer section doesn’t have the grandeur or monumental architecture and we never walk through there; I suppose that would feel different anyway. The older sections have a notable amount of (Biblical) scripture on the stones; verses that look ahead to heaven and a promise to thjose still here that the Words are true. Occasionally there are new graves in the older sections. I came across a 2011 fresh date for a woman (almost 100!) who died this year and her shell was placed in this old family plot. Her ancestors went back to the mid 1800’s.

When I visit the modern cemetery where my parents' shells remain it is such a different experience. It is a vast open space covered in plastic flowers and artificial wreaths (nearly all the stones are flush to the ground for ease of mowing). It is situated on a slightly rolling hill with very few trees. It sits in stark contrast to the arboretum and architectural aspects of Lake View which is filled with color and texture - it is full of life - strangely. The residents lie in quiet repose with no message except for what their monuments have to say; they are no longer there having gone on to one of two places.

And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

Fish are flying once again ~~~

Walks on the beach finding driftwood ... sorting the piles of treasures and knocking off the sand ... drying them thoroughly for the longest time while my imagination runs wild... THIS is the stuff of summer! I made (and sold) so many crazy, wacky, wild fish characters in the years before and up to 2008 ~ look at this funny guy... purple polka dots and such a grin!

As many of you know the last couple or so years have been plenty rough with so many funerals (three in my own family), hospitals, surgeries, and oh-so-many changes... and as a result my art slipped behind the curtain a tiny little bit as I focused on commissions and small-format projects. If there is one thing that remains constant throughout my life it is that I am adaptable; I shift into whatever zone I need to and go forward where I am at. Right now I am rather alert and a bit stunned after all that has transpired. I might even look that way ~~ deer-eyes in headlights ~~ but I am happily standing still for this moment because there have been no major traumas or necessary adjustments needed in the last few months or so. It feels a little strange after the long journey of the last few years... kind of like being thrown from the back of a farm truck after getting used to being in said farm truck. I can't yell "I'm back!" because I was never gone. I was just occupied with several other callings some of which are complete. I guess I'll yell "I'm done!" since several of those callings are retired, and "I'm ready!" as new ones rush in to give me more to adapt to... thrive in...

I struggled briefly ~~ a tiny bit ~~ getting back into making larger, long-term art messes and looking too far ahead (or so I thought). That didn't last long though and when my son went looking for something in the attic just last week he unearthed my last great beach combing box of super-dried driftwood from the summer of 2008. I immediately recognized fish bodies and potential signs --- all my previous intentions and ideas came flooding back like there had been no loss, or cancer, or death, or hospitals. Here are some pieces of driftwood that will become FISH (and a sign [sold] tossed in at the same time - by special request for an ETSY customer).

Here I have added wood FINS and TAILS ~~ you can see them GETTING THEIR WHIMSY ON already!

Next I added the wacky SMILES and place the EYES...

I will be "playing" with them all week - making them seriously FUN... painted details will cover them as the shapes and textures direct...
The largest ones in this group are over THREE FEET long!

... and when they are finished there are more waiting to be born ...

It is already shaping up to be a fabulous summer!

Poke Poke Poke - an adventure in needle felting

Needle felting -- either you know what it is or you look at the result and think "Oh ... stuffed animal" ... but have no clue how it came to be. A stuffed animal it is not. It makes (seemingly) no sense that taking a pile of raw wool (or roving) - this fluff that looks like cotton candy - and then poking it thousands upon thousands of times (and thousands and thousands more times) until it gets pushed and formed into a semi-solid shape... would become a rabbit or a lamb ... or any number of things.

The very thing that makes wool feel itchy to some of us - little micro 'barbs' (scales) on the fibers - are what makes this all possible. The poky needles used in the process also have barbs -- and poking the wool causes it to mat (entangle) together. As the driver of the needle it helps to have a vision in mind as to where the needle is poking and why -- what the desired shape will be, etc... I "see" what I want in 3D (in my mind) so it comes naturally for me to turn cotton candy fluff into an animal. I don't find it that different from putting paint where I want it to go when I am working with acrylic on canvas or wood.

I often begin with a big glob of the cotton candy stuff that I gentle curl into a ball of sorts (left alone it would unfurl and remain a wispy pile of fluff) - I, however, hold onto that loosely formed ball of fluff and begin poking it to smithereens (trying so hard NOT to poke myself - the needles are wicked wicked nasty sharp). I sometimes "poke" up in the air and I sometimes "poke" with the fluff against a foam cushion.

I am self taught and use my own designs with only one exception* ... I make up all my own animals (usually as I go). I start with an initial "ball" or oval shape and then decide what (or who) it will become. When I first tried this whole needle felting thing I looked at a pattern for a *duck -- (of course, a duck) and not one to follow instructions easily or obediently I altered it to fit my own ability and the duck became my own duck (though I won't call him an original like I do my other creations since his genealogy is traceable to a pattern).

Here I am attaching the gangly-long legs (which are bendable since there are pipe cleaners inside of them). The foam block shown here is my favorite kind. I have also used a grey utility foam - but it doesn't hold up as well the the abusive poking and pieces of foam can get tangled into the wool that have to be fished out - meh.

I found an old 1800's book with the most perfectly browned pages - very dark around the edges and in solid condition (but of no collector-value). The pages were thick and strong enough for paint and so was born the series My Funny Valentine. I love how the page headers (chapter titles) have ironically fit each character.

Stained Glass Paper Painting - huh?

King Solomon said there is nothing new under the sun - yet I keep trying to do my own thing. This week's brain-explosion involved water coloring sections of a painting to look like stained glass - with true dividers (fake leading) created from dimensional paint.

I better show you rather than tell you...

I decided that since this was a whole new adventure that I wanted to take I had better not get hung up on the design aspect and, therefore, by using art I already created (a recycled design kind of thing) - I would not get bogged down on that part - and could thusly (who talks like that - Frasier Crane?) focus on the technique or, in this case, the latest hair-brained scheme.

I took watercolor paper and drew my design onto it lightly - of course I should have measured and been more graphically centered and all that jazz, but I was racing myself to get the idea onto paper before I decided to do something completely different like make an altered doll out of a shoe and an old bone or something...

I next took dimensional paint (that wicked crafty stuff in a bottle that splatters, gets clogged, and at the worst possible moment "burps" and globs driblets where you don't want them; yes, that stuff) and went over my pencil marks. I hoped this would look like stained glass "leading" - kind of. What do you think?

I began to watercolor ... well - at first I grabbed some regular colored pencils that were mixed in with my watercolor pencils - ugh... then I got out my really nifty Holbein WC tubes and saved the day... As I pooled the water my hope was that the lighter areas would mimic light shining through the back of glass... maybe it worked a little?

Anyway - I'll hush now and let Phil sing... (True Colors) ... sing with me...

The final FINAL pictures will be from scans - all squared up nicely and will reflect the 'true colors' (wink) more accurately - I hope. The originals will be listed in my ETSY store soon and giclee reproductions will eventually follow.

You with the sad eyes - don't be discouraged ! oh I realize it's hard to take courage in a world full of people - you can lose sight of it all and the darkness inside you can make you fell so small. My sweet friends - passers by - artists - precious ones...

~I have not uttered “why me?” throughout this entire too-many-funerals-many-years ride… not for the 12 days as I sat next to my Mom dying in the hospital - swatting away some of the death-mongering medical staff that deem the elderly spent and useless. I did not utter against God as Mom faced a wicked month in “rehab” (aka a nursing-home-dying-depot)… I didn’t argue that she was handed a mortal blow in the form of a great big engraving across her forehead that read “Metastasic Breast Cancer at age 84 / Doomed” … the “doomed” part was wholley the result of the cruelty of words; the way things are spoken carelessly; the lies that are thoughtlessly sputtered by so many fools.

~I came close to questioning the reactions from extended family members who didn’t get the big picture … and when I tried to get them to spend time with Mom (for their sakes not mine) I was met with my own anger and frustration...a tall hurdle for me. Even when I went through several months of my own head-spinning, breath-sucking cancer testing which resulted in a lumpectomy for my birthday last June - I fought hard to not allow the language of death or the lies so easily spoken by those so well-intended, but oh so ill-informed, to crush me. I separated myself from liars and fools. I have not found comfort in phrases like “why me” ~ not because I am strong or wise, but because it just does not matter. Did Job not say “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him” ?

~God has made His presence known in very real ways to me. He gave me literal messengers and very tangible messages. I am not a flamboyant woo-woo zombie surface-believer type; I am a Christian who is completely reliant on the mercy and grace of God - and He met me in very real ways throughout this very real war I have been plunged into.

~I have come to realize that making it through one monumental battle does not award me the respite of facing less, or better yet, NO more battles. In fact, they seem to get closer and uglier as I move ahead. I am intrigued that the enemy of my soul is frightened enough of my sure and eternal standing in Christ that he attempts to derail me again and again. Loser.

~Am I typical? I am. No trial or temptation or wicked circumstance or foolish voice or insensitive stranger or dark diagnosis has befallen me that is not common to all of us.

~Why then do the song lyrics capture my attention when I hear “Cause I know there’s got to be another level. Somewhere closer to the other side - And I’m feeling like it’s now or never - Can I break the spell of the typical” -- because it is all about how I react and what I do with these very typical, common complaints of life… no matter how many I face and how often. I am called to rise above the typical - to be more than I am right now and be a light in a dark world. “Come on, can’t I dream for one day - There’s nothing that can’t be done, but how long should it take somebody before they can be someone?”

~' I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me…' that’s it... however long it takes. period.

(The Message): verse 12 - Friends, when life gets really difficult, don't jump to the conclusion that God isn't on the job. Instead, be glad that you are in the very thick of what Christ experienced. This is a spiritual refining process, with glory just around the corner.

(Amplified): verse 12 - Beloved, do not be amazed and bewildered at the fiery ordeal which is taking place to test your quality, as though something strange (unusual and alien to you and your position) were befalling you.

NEXT DAY POST SCRIPT:
Another side to this whole "breaking the spell of the typical" is my continued drive and restlessness to get myself out of this art-rut that captivates and holds me prisoner... where I create in spurts because that is all I am able to do. I have more in me than can get out and the result is more unproductivity than productivty (alot of good intentions left unfinished). It is "now or never" I think - or at least I want to attempt to think that. Life is going to keep happening (thank God, amen). I can look back and see why I haven't accomplished much, but I cannot use that to excuse anything. Life (and death, and accidents, and diseases, and good things too) will continue to come at full speed - right in my face. I am longing to capture all that I can while I can despite the speed of life - so that I can rise above mediocrity... typical ... usual ... average.

POST Post Script (after reading some of the responses here and on FB) I want to emphasize that
I didn't ask "why me" because I am strong or know how to handle difficult things - I am WEAK and FRAIL - and there were times when all I could utter was "Jesus" -- and it was in that weakness He came to me and held me together. In Romans 8:26-28 Paul speaks of the Holy Spirit groaning on our behalf ... I realize now (thank-you Pastor Alistair Begg) that when I had nothing left within myself Jesus was then fully there for me in my nothingness. "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will" ... amen

A celebration of color - measuring 7.5" x 11.5" ... painting entirely from my imagination* onto a reclaimed piece of hardwood destined for the fire! *That is to say, regarding my "imagination", you may not expect anatomical accuracy as I take liberties, especially with color, and afterall - my imagination does include things that already exist - already created by The Creator - who is precise and anatomically correct, but also uses wild colors... I follow His lead when it comes to basic shapes and number of fins, but even then I stray... afterall, folk art is a curious thing.

Dad and me Summer 2008

It has been two months since I posted, but I have "blogged" in my mind a hundred times at least. It has been over a year and a half since my Dad stepped into eternity. Mom has been shrinking of a broken heart since; and now metastatic cancer is shrinking her a bit more.

Dad Late Summer 2008 (he was hunting for driftwood & beachglass for me)

There have been dozens of trips to doctors and tests and procedures... not unlike the last 15 or so years with she and Dad, and me as their medical "tour director" except I have asked siblings to join in this time. It is not about me needing help; it is about them getting to know Mom in a new way by being there with her on the front line.

It has all made me think of Dad more and more (as if that were possible). He always was my one true ally, friend, defender, secret-keeper, and comrade in this motley, lovely family I have been placed in.

We recently purchased "Matlock" on dvd and have been watching and smiling. You see, Dad had Matlock's hair and occasionally some of his expressions. We catch glimpses of "Papa" when we watch. Yesterday I realized it was Andy Griffith's ("Matlock") 84th birthday and I stumbled across a poignant music video of him with Brad Paisley called "Watin on a Woman"...

The aged Andy really does look more like my Dad as my Dad aged ... moreso than even Matlock did. The music video is warm, sweet, and heart wrenching as 'Andy' prepares for death and goes on ahead "waitin" for his woman to join him on the other side... he doesn't mind the wait... he wants her to take her time getting there.

I began this week really immersing myself in the lyrics of this modern hymn... and I was sure (or at least hopeful) we would sing it at church this Easter morning... We did!- with full choir and orchestra. This was greatly encouraging to me and I was caught up barely able to "sing" (which is not a sad thing at all as I use the term "sing" lightly when applied to myself... I more or less croak and squeak and always feel the need to apologize to whomever sits in front of me). HOPE for the believer is not something that might happen or might come or might materialize ... HOPE for the believer is a promise... a guarantee and THAT is the Hope we sing about... the HOPE we celebrate! ~Katey

Cuppies 'n Friends

Above is a collection of one dozen healthy cupcakes - painted with acrylics on archival textured artist mat board - each measuring a tiny 2-inches square. I am not quite done yet ...

I have ideas to frame them on larger pieces of stock -- maybe use them on tags or cards ... I'm not sure yet exactly where they will all go, but I have been enjoying the 'baking' process since I have been away from my studio for too long!

I was a consultant on a reclamation project in Willoughby, Ohio several years back - where a pathetic old building was being given new life and now serves as a Bed and Breakfast. A few of the walls had to be moved/removed and I was able to reclaim some original 1884 framing lumber. Remember when 2x4 actually meant 2” x 4” ? (me neither ha ha) - At one time dimensional lumber was actually the dimension it was referred to! I have taken a few actual 2x4 boards that were unable to be used any other way in the lengths at hand - and I salvaged them into chubby chunks to paint on. Some of them still reveal ghosts of where the plaster and lathe attached to them.They are rough, have nail holes, scars, and fabulous character. Check them out in my ETSY shop!

About my domino pendants...

Size: 1" x 2" pendant on a white 18" suede cord with clasps

Type: Exceptional DOMINO ART PENDANT NECKLACE

Mixed media (painting, collage, glaze effects)

Ingredients: domino, acrylic paints (many many many layers), antique crackle medium, glazes, collage image, ric rac ribbon/or lace, findings, metallic paint, and love

I have taken an actual game piece domino (not a bead or craft store domino) and created a very textural and lush finish with multiple paint layers, crackle medium and various glazes. There is a rich and glorious textural depth to my handpainting. The collaged image is from a collection created by the "Land of Enchantment" (an amazing artist! see her link to the left). I have added details along the edges and all the dots are painted with metallic leaf. The back side is as pretty as the front - so the pendant is reversible!

“Charmed, I’m sure…”

(a new series)

Introducing a new series (otherwise known, in my case, as a rabbit trail) - of charmed jewelry. These necklaces are assemblages of found pieces and what-nots - mostly 'new', but sometimes 'old' mixed in as well.

I always wanted a charm bracelet as a little girl so now I find myself making charm necklaces - ala a little more luxurious :) The various price ranges within the series reflects the varying ingredients, weight, time, and aesthetic. I use new and vintage pieces, but be assured the pieces are silver plated, gold plated, non-lead, and even non-nickel. If, however, you have metal allergies and require pure, precious metals be cautious of these please. I often treat the pieces with stained glass solvents to add patina and age. They are endearing!

I hope you enjoy each and every one.

I have wrestled with whether or not I will be doing “live” art festivals in the upcoming months. Historically they have been a great boon for me, and I would expect success this year as well - but I will be blunt -- after just barely crawling out of a six-week illness (bronchitis, not the flu) I am not at all certain I can face sick buyers and germs “out there”...especially during a pandemic.

It is with this in mind (along with the great gas savings you could enjoy and the bonus of avoiding any crowd wrangling in chain stores and big box stores) I have decided that I will be holding my own OnLine Art Festivals this autumn… right in my shop.

I will be loading my Etsy Shop with all manner of gift giving goodness! As has always been the tradition and intention of my blog - I bring you a mix of my art, along with music (cuz I can't live without it), and occasionally my little thoughts...

As I looked for an Elton song to carry your eyes through my Work-in-Progress photos here - I found this particular version of DANIEL.

I simply love the song... the two brother aspect of it always tugged at my heart (I have two sons). I never knew the context of the song until Elton explained it via the movie behind him as you can see in this Live version. The song is forever changed for me.

My Dad was a WWII soldier, and my grand-nephew is currently serving in the Navy.

I kind of get a giggle out of Alice Cooper's many commercials - remember this one?

and NOW... Back to the WiPs (scroll down for MORE - in many previous posts).

So here began ALiCE ...

I never really know what I'm doing when I start - it just happens.

I think that is why many artists I know (self included) kinda moan at the word "commission" - because they are often so specific that they can be stifling.

When we arty-types are free to just go with whatever - good stuff usually happens.

When Alice began to be born on this canvas I looked through concert shots mostly (having seen him in ... errr... 1979 or something I can't say I remember facial details from first hand observation)... so lots of photos were in order.
As you see, his latest CD was indeed the obvious view taken.

I have a large series of Rock Faces on exhibition near Cleveland [Alice is among them] - and for those of you interested in your own custom work from me ~ you now have an idea of my style and versatility (since painting my own Uncle Bub and Aunt Netti wouldn't really give you a clue if I am adept at representation or not. ) Exhibiting famous-y mugs for you here lets you see if you like what I do...and it is just plain ole fun for me.
